Long Run 3/20/09

On Saturday March 20, I ran about 11 miles!  It was an alltime high in mileage for running at one time.  It was a good run, but was extremely sore afterwards.

I ran one whole loop of Central Park for about 6 miles with a 10 minute pace group.  After the first loop, I stopped with one of the coaches to get some Gatorade before resuming for the second loop.  The second loop was killer for a number of reasons; I had a blister developing on the heel of each foot! Both knees were becoming sore from the constant pounding! My left leg was becoming very heavy due to all of the uphill running (evidently I have a weak left hip flexor)! Finally, I was becoming fatigued from not replenishing calories at the break!

Throughout the second loop Coach Rev was talking me through the hills, “focus on the street lights, let them pull you in”, “lower your shoulders, watch your technique”, “slow down”, etc. It was great to have the one-on-one attention and encouragement, plus she gave me a shopping list of things that I need to get.  As bad as it was towards the end of the run, she offered that “it is better to make every mistake possible in practice so that there are no surprises during the actual marathon.”

Shopping List: body glide (for blisters/chaffing), Gu or Gels (to replenish calories and electrolytes during a run), belt for carrying liquids while running, and a sports watch.

Advice that was offered too late to be useful: walk down stairs backwards when sore from running.
