Half Marathon!!!

I have some exciting news...since Sam ditched me on Saturday and decided to run without me, I decided to run my first Half Marathon yesterday, (Easter morning) instead. I have some good news and some bad news to report about the half marathon. The good news is that I finished first place in the half marathon. Not bad for my first one. The bad news is that I also finished in last place since I was the only person running.

Sunday morning I woke up planning to run 12 miles, (which is a 2 mile increase form my last Saturday long run). I decided to do laps around my parents street. Each lap is 1.2 miles so 10 laps is 12 miles exactly. During the first 2 laps I contemplated quitting and not finishing the run. At around the forth lap I was thinking of cutting the run short. I'm still having a tough time staying motivated during my runs when I am running alone. Around the 5th lap told myself to grow up, and realized that if I ran 11 laps instead of 10 it was slightly more than a half marathon at 13.2 miles. Once I realized that I knew I had to run a half marathon.

After deciding to run a half marathon I kept with it and was able to finish the entire thing. My time wasn't the best considering I stopped a few time to catch my breath and talk to Sam as I was passing my parents house. The loop I ran is also full of hills and not mostly flat like I am used to. However, I finished what I set out to do. I need to worry about being able to run long distances first and then I'll try to increase my pace after.

  3. Henry,

Congrats on your run. Multi-loop runs, particularly short ones, are quite paradoxical. Very easy to start, very hard to finish. While they are undaunting due to the fact you will "be back home" in no time at all, they provide so many opportunities to quit! Also, don't feel bad about a dip in motivation, especially at the start of a long solo run. It happens to me all the time. I was very appreciative to have your brother for company last week, as I was/am feeling a certain lack of motivation of late. I always find that the first step is the hardest. Good luck in San Diego,

    Forrest
